Application of SNI Standards in Business
A business requires SNI standards to comply with applicable rules and laws. Apart from carrying out your obligations and rights as a business actor, these standards guarantee the quality of your goods and services.
SNI also supports the progress of the country’s economy because products that successfully pass the standards are high quality, safe, and legal. So what? What are the stages of obtaining an SNI label for your business products? Let’s get the complete information in this review!
What is the SNI Standard?
SNI, or Indonesian National Standard, is a government standard that applies nationally for production results by individuals, entities, or companies. The Technical Committee formulates SNI, and then the determination is carried out by the Indonesian National Standardization Body (BSN).
The formulation of SNI refers to PP 102 of 2000 regarding National Standardization as its legal basis.
Standardization based on government regulations aims to increase protection for business actors, consumers, workers, and other communities regarding safety, security, preserving environmental functions, smooth trade, and creating healthy competition when trading.
Indonesian National Standards (SNI) for Product Safety and Quality
The Application of SNI to a product is applied as a stamp, which is given to each item if it complies with government regulations. This stamp is a guarantee of the suitability of the product because it meets the applicable quality requirements.
Having SNI standards will provide many benefits. Consumers who use your business products will have the right to safe use.
Then, the benefit of SNI for you as a business actor is to protect your rights and obligations in producing and marketing your products. You will also get more value in the eyes of consumers because product quality is guaranteed, especially for business people with halal certification.
Type of SNI Standard
The National Standardization (BSN) determines two types of SNI: mandatory and voluntary. SNI must cover products whose use guarantees health, safety, and environmental sustainability. If it does not have an SNI label, trade in Indonesia is prohibited.
Apart from the required products, SNI standards are voluntary. However, you need to know that even though it is voluntary, having an SNI label will add value to your product for consumers. So, you need to get SNI certification.
Then, there are three activity classifications when viewed according to SNI. The following is a list and explanation:
1. Management System Certification
This certification is for a company’s management system. Examples of ISO certification are SNI ISO, such as SNI ISO 9001, SNI ISO 14001, and SNI ISO HACCP.
2. Product Certification
This certification is for products from companies based on SNI for specific products. For example, SNI 3554:2015 for bottled drinking water products, SNI 1811:2007 for helmet products, and SNI ISO 8214 4-2010 for Indonesian National Standard for children’s toys.
3. Personnel Certification
This certification covers personnel competencies such as PPC, Auditors, Electrical Personnel, and Oil and Gas Personnel.
Process of Obtaining an SNI Label
Getting an SNI label is challenging for a business because the process is not easy, and the requirements are numerous. However, as a business actor, you will feel the benefits after this long process.
One is faster business development and progress because SNI products will be more trusted by consumers, and your business can dominate the market well.
You can get an SNI label by visiting the Ministry of Industry and looking for the Standardization Center Product Certification Institute (LSpro-Pustan) section. The steps you must take are as follows.
1. Fill out the SPPT SNI Application Form
To fill out this form, prepare and attach a document as a legalized photocopy of the ISO 9001:2000 Quality Management System Certificate. You can get this certificate at LSSM (Quality System Certification Institute), accredited by KAN (National Accreditation Committee).
If your product is imported from abroad, include a certificate from the LSSM of the country of origin of the product with a recognition agreement with the KAN institution.
For the record, ensure you have prepared the main requirements for SNI standard registration. These requirements include a photocopy of the company’s notarial deed, a photocopy of the TDP and SIUP, a photocopy of the NPWP, and a trademark registration letter from the Director General of Intellectual Property Rights.
2. Verify Application
After filling in and completing the application documents, LSPro-Pustan will verify several things—for example, the range of audit locations and the ability to understand local languages.
The general verification time is one day, and then, after the verification is complete, you will get an invoice containing details of the fees you need to pay.
3. Audit of the Quality Management System
Next, the certification body will check compliance with the implementation of the quality management system. Your business will be checked for completeness and adequacy of documents regarding the manufacturer’s quality management system and whether they comply with SPPT SNI requirements.
The certification body will review your business’s Quality Management System documents in the document adequacy audit process. If it turns out that something is not appropriate, then you must correct it within a maximum period of two months.
4. Sample Test and Product Assessment
This stage is when the certification body visits your business production location and takes product samples for sample testing. Testing is carried out by experts and professionals who have mastered this field.
Product sample tests are carried out in testing laboratories or at accredited inspection institutions. If you want to apply for a laboratory owned by a business manufacturer, it is necessary to involve witnesses when the sample test occurs.
The sample will be labeled as LCU (Test Sample Label) and then sealed. Product sample testing will take a minimum of 20 working days. If the results do not meet the requirements, you must retest the sample yourself until it is suitable and can be rechecked by LSPro-Pustan.
If the test has passed, the final result is issuing a Test Results Certification for your business.
5. Certification Decision
After going through the process above, the team from the certification body will summarize the audit and test results armed with audit documents and sample test results. The material preparation takes seven working days, followed by a one-day panel meeting.
6. Submission of SPPT-SNI
After the panel meeting is over, LSPro-Pustan will clarify your company. The results of the decision to hand over the certificate are based on product evaluation, including administrative completeness, SNI provision fulfillment, and implementation of a quality management system in the production process.
If you pass the evaluation, SPPT-SNI will be issued for your business. The validity period of the SNI certificate is three years.
