SUCOFINDO’s Support for Groundbreaking MBZ-JKW International Mangrove Research Center: Paving the Way for a Greener Future!

7 June, 2024

Sunday (19/5) PT SUCOFINDO supports the development of the Mohammed Bin Zayed-Jokowi International Mangrove Research Center (MBZ-JKW IMRC) by participating in the groundbreaking ceremony during the 10th World Water Forum. This Mangrove Research Center is a joint commitment between the Government of Indonesia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in advancing research on mangrove ecosystems in Indonesia and globally.

The groundbreaking ceremony was also attended by the Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment, Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, the Deputy Minister of Environment and Forestry, Alue Dohong, and the Minister of Climate Change and Environment of the UAE, HE Dr. Amna bint Abdullah Al Dahak.

Budi Utomo, the Director of Industrial Services of PT SUCOFINDO, who was also present, stated that the International Mangrove Research Center in Bali is expected to address the challenges of overcoming climate change through the sustainable preservation of mangroves.

“The MBZ-JKW IMRC will support the success rate of planting and developing mangrove species in Indonesia. One of the key aspects currently being focused on is the role of blue carbon. This relates to the carbon stored in mangrove ecosystems. Mangroves are known to be carbon sinks, storing four times more carbon than tropical rainforests. This aligns with the role of PT SUCOFINDO as a Validation and Verification Institution,” said Budi Utomo, the Director of Industrial Services at PT SUCOFINDO.

Budi Utomo added that the implementation of blue carbon can play a significant role in the success of climate change mitigation. “Through blue carbon, we can achieve a reduction in carbon emissions or measurable carbon absorption, which can also generate carbon credits needed in the carbon market,” said Budi Utomo.

Furthermore, Budi Utomo explained that blue carbon credits can provide a positive image for companies as entities that care about the environment and are committed to sustainability. “This implementation aligns with the role of PT SUCOFINDO as an accredited Validation and Verification Institution, which can support the blue carbon credit process,” said Budi Utomo.
