Know the Types of Oil and Gas Drilling

Recognize Oil and Gas Drilling by Purpose, Location, and Shape of the Hole

Oil and gas drilling is a common thing in Indonesia as a country that has large oil and gas reserves in the world. There are various techniques used in this drilling and it is based on the purpose, location, and shape of the hole.

So, the technique needs to be understood. For further explanation, please refer to the following presentation below.

Oil and Gas Drilling Based on Drilling Purpose

The first discussion is the types of oil and gas drilling based on the purpose of the drilling. This type is divided into 3 types:

1. Exploration

That is a technique used to prove whether there is oil and gas or not in a basin. In this stage, data will be collected to consider the possibility for drilling.

When conducting exploration, it is necessary to know the depth of the rock layers and the nature of the rock so that an exploration well can be formed. Exploration well is commonly called a wildcat

2. Delineation

This oil and gas drilling is carried out to determine the distribution of the reservoir, its boundaries, and its thickness. Usually, it is carried out after the exploration process and the processing costs are not as high as the previous stage.

3. Exploitation

It is an activity of draining the production reservoir as well as increasing production. Usually, it is done after the next two stages are completed. In this case, exploration wells can turn into exploitation wells.

Oil and Gas Drilling Based on Location

In addition to the purpose, the distribution of drilling is also carried out based on its location, which is divided into the following two types:

1. Land (Onshore)

It is carried out at locations on the mainland, either in the highlands or lowlands. Usually, oil and gas drilling is also known as onshore drilling.

2. Offshore (Offshore)

Meanwhile, this type of drilling is carried out in watery areas or watery environments, such as seas, lakes, rivers, or swamps. So, it is not focused on offshore locations only, but on drilling areas with other watery conditions.

Oil and Gas Drilling Based on Hole Shape

Next is the types of drilling based on the shape of the hole, divided into two types, which are:

1. Straight or Straight Hole Drilling

This type is done by making a hole or well with a straight or vertical shape to reach the target point. Drilling activities are categorized as straight holes if:

– Done in a cone with an angle of 5 degrees and a height of 10 thousand feet.

– Unturned potholes with a slope of more than 3 degrees or 100 feet.

2. Directional Drilling

Directional drilling is another type of drilling by turning the pipe towards the target that is not straight with the surface. Usually, it is chosen because of geography and cost considerations. Some types of directional drilling are:

– Inaccessible location drilling is a drilling technique in the most common direction to reach layers that cannot be achieved using ordinary methods.

– Multiple well drilling is multiple wells required when members are in locations with limited surface, for example offshore or on a single platform

– Side tracking, which is a technique to straighten a wellbore that has a slope or is used to bypass a hole with a buried pipe so it doesn’t hit the pipe.

– Relief well drilling is a member technique to turn off a well that is blowing out. A directional technique is used so that the well holes do not collide with each other, making exploitation become difficult.

Basically, drilling the layers of the earth to get gas and oil is not an easy matter and requires no small amount of money. Therefore, it is necessary to choose the right technique based on data in the field so that the costs incurred are efficient and optimal.

Such work should be carried out by professional and experienced personnel. If you are going to do drilling work, Sucofindo is a professional in this field.
