Ministry of Maritime and Fisheries (KKP) has stated that Indonesia is a country with the highest potency on tuna in the world. The total production of tuna reaches 613,575 tons worth IDR6.3 trillion per year.

Supported with strategic geographical territory for tuna which covers two oceans i.e. Hindia Ocean and Pacific Ocean, Indonesia becomes a vital country to global tuna in view of its natural resources, habitat, and also trade.

Minister of Maritime and Fisheries Sharif C. Sutardjo said Indonesia’s tuna is currently facing a number of challenges which include productivity declining, size decreasing, as well as the fishing area which tends to go to the high seas.

For that, the Ministry is increasing a sustainable fisheries development. As for tuna potency, the Ministry has conducted research on the population.

“The research which is conducted by Loka Research of Tuna Benoa becomes the Ministry’s commitment to keep the sustainability of tuna resources in Indonesia Ocean as well as to meet the high demand of tuna in international market,” he said, as cited from Antara, Monday (2/17).

Yet he asserted that the exploitation level of certain tuna such as Albakor (Thunnus alalunga), Madidihang (Thunnus albacares), matabesar (Thunnus Obesus), and sirip biru selatan (Thunnus Maccoyii) in the Indonesia’s Fisheries Development Area is very alarming under fully exploited up to over-exploited status. It is only Cakalang (Katsuwonus Pelamis) still in the moderate status.
