Horticultural seeds needs this year may increase 16.6% from 6,000 tons to 7,000 tons per year driven by increased demand due to extreme weather lately. Member of Horticultural Seed Producers Association of Indonesia (Hortindo) Glenn Pardede said the demand for seed increased following the extreme weather which caused crop failure in a number production centers in Indonesia.
Such condition forced farmers to replant which leads to increased demand for horticultural seeds.
"Many farmers tried to plant horticultural crops again by spreading seeds. The seeds purchasing is not burdensome, only 3-5% of the total farmers production," Glenn who also served as Managing Director of PT East West Seed Indonesia (Ewindo) told Bisnis, Tuesday (2/4/2014).
According to him, the extreme weather made plants become susceptible to disease and submerged by flood so it cannot be produced.
It said the increased demand for seed occurred for cabbage, tomatoes, corn, peppers, and pumpkin.
Moreover, the holticultural import restrictions by the government also triggered increased demand for seeds. "The government’s restrictions policy on imports for seeding positively affected horticulture," he said.
Glen explained horticulture is a very profitable business. This is because if the seed demand increases, then the crops price would also be appropriate and profitable.
However, it should be noted that in this horticultural business an austerity to the situation and weather which sometimes cannot be predicted is also necessary.
"Doing a horticulture business should be smart in seeing what is being done by other farmers, whether we should invest or not" he said.
Indonesian Farmers Association (HKTI) West Java assessed the in order to boost horticulture’s farmers’ welfare, warehouse receipt scheme is needed for seeds storage or postharvest.
"The warehouse receipt should be established so as to secure horticultural farmers' welfare," he said.
He explained the farmer’s behavior issues who want to quickly gain the profit must be addressed by the government.
We ask the government to concern on the long-term by providing counseling to farmers on the importance of warehouse receipt scheme.
