Indonesia to host ASEAN officials on environment meeting

Indonesia will play host to the 24th ASEAN Senior Officials on the Environment (ASOEN) from Aug. 26 to 31 in Jakarta.According to Minister of the Environment Balthasar Kambuaya, the 24th ASOEN aims to create strategic policies to assist and monitor the implementation of the ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community (ASCC) Score Card as part of the framework for environmental preservation across the ASEAN region.
"Indonesia is pushing to accelerate the implementation of the ASCC Score Card, which focuses on the sustainability of environmental elements," he said.
Kambuaya added that the meeting was also organised to increase environmental awareness in the ASEAN community to create a clean green region through natural-resource preservation for sustainable social and economic development, land and water conservation, biodiversity, and forest conservation, as well as enhancements in air quality.
ASOEN supports ASEAN efforts to overcome global environmental problems such as climate change and ozone preservation and is proactive in developing eco-friendly technologies, he explained.
The 24th ASOEN in Jakarta will see participation from a hundred senior officials from environment-related ministries and organizations.
Besides the ASOEN members, the meeting will also be attended by representatives from ASEAN Plus countries: China, South Korea, Japan, Australia, India, New Zealand, Russia, and the United States of America.
