Onions supplies sufficient: Agriculture Minister

The Ministry of Agriculture is optimistic that onion production is able to meet national needs.Agriculture Minister Suswono said the onion supply is estimated to be stable in April because of the commodity harvest will occur.

“If there are imports, a maximum of only 25,000 ton,” he told the official website of Agriculture Department, Saturday (03/30).

Onions Indonesia's total imports last year reached 122,190 ton, or equivalent of US$54.48 million. Around 103,635 ton, equivalent to 84.81% of total imports in 2012, imported in the period February until May.

Data from the Ministry of Agriculture showed onion production Indonesia continued to decline during 2010 to 2012. Last year, production reached 959 577 ton, down of 8.52% compared with production in 2010, as many as 1.05 million ton. (kal/tw)
