Developing Innovation-Based Technology

After defeated by allied powers in World War II, Japan showed a quick recovery and now it stand up to be the great nation in Asia. The success keys are innovation and persistentUnited States, let’s say, the country is constantly under pressure due to the world economic crisis now, but it survives.

It is all because of their creative innovation which has not yet been overpowered by other countries.

Innovation-based economy not only creates a superior economy, but also builds a strong sense of competitiveness.

Speaking about Indonesia, the country is also required to shift the orientation to the continuous development of innovation-based economy, rather than simply relying on the advantage of natural resources.

We cannot just rely on 'competitiveness' of human resources, such as low-paid workers.
If we are still relying on such thing, we will be left behind by the other nations.

Therefore, building innovation-based economy has become so important and strategic measure for a nation to grow.

This spirit is also emphasized by Vice President Boediono, when he gave closing speech in Indonesia-Japan Innovation Convention 2012 at the Ganesha Culture Building, Bandung Institute of Technology, Sunday (12/2).

The Vice President even associated the innovation with entrepreneurship development. The numbers of small entrepreneurs in Indonesia is relatively low. Referring to World Bank data, the numbers of entrepreneurs in Indonesia by 2008 was only 1.56% of the total population.

This figure is relatively small compared to Malaysia which reached 4%, Thailand with 4.1% and Singapore with 7.2%, said Boediono.

It means Indonesia needs more innovative entrepreneurs.

The challenge is now. We have to create a synergy in exploring research opportunities and development, which can be utilized for the benefit of business and society.

That purpose summarizes as a key message from Indonesia-Japan Innovation Convention 2012 in Bandung since.

The message is even encapsulated in the Bandung Declaration of Innovation, which consists of seven items which has wide range influences, covering the development of science and technology.

Everything leads to the roadmap of innovation-based economy.
Stakeholders of this big project are not only included the academic environment, society and government.

The focus of the roadmap is broad, including energy, biotechnology, transportation, materials, creative industries, entrepreneurship and policy.

Of course, declaration is not enough to develop innovation-based technology. The real action is focusing on executing what we have in the road map. (t03/dpr)
