The Government promises Australia that beef market in Indonesia will reach US$35 billion or IDR321 trillion in the next 10-15 years.People’s beef consumption will increase to 20 kilogram per annum from currently 2 kilogram per annum, Minister of Trade Gita Wirjawan said.
Based on Bisnis’ data, Australia is the largest calf exporter to Indonesia with export value of US$5 billion per annum. Besides calf, it also exported frozen beef.
Indonesia and Australia should now begin to discuss the form of cooperation to fulfill the beef market in Indonesia.

Currently, both countries owned a joint venture called Indobeef to provide cattle for the people in Indonesia. The company is a pilot project for other cooperation in the future.
“People’s purchasing power has increased so that each person could consume 20 kilogram per annum in the next 10-15 years from currently 2 kilogram per annum,” Gita said today in the press conference with Australia Minister of Commerce Craig Emerson at the Trade Ministry Office.

In the meeting, the foreign trade delegation also accompanied by 20 Australia’s largest cattle farmers in Asia.
Australian Trade Minister considered the Indonesian Government’s target to increase beef consumption as an ambitious target.
He said the cattle trade between Indonesia and Australia is increasingly improving although both countries have faced various challenges. (T06/aph)
