Dahlan Iskan questions rice import policy
“We are blessed with thousands of acres of paddy fields and we bear agrarian country status, so why should we import anymore rice,” he said as quoted by tempo.co.
His comment was made in response to the Central Logistics Agency (Bulog), which is tasked with securing the country’s rice supply, and that agency's decision to buy 1.9 million tons of rice from Thailand, Vietnam and India with the latest shipment expected next month.
He said that fulfilling the rice demand of the nation was the responsibility of the government, which it must place high in its priorities list, ahead of any political or economic goals.
“There would be no such thing as economic or political pride if there was a rice crisis (in the country),” he said.
