The government continuous to look closely at food security, both in terms of price stability and adequate supply in 2012. In a year expected to see a global economic downturn, Coordinating Minister for the Economy Hatta Radjasa said here on Wednesday that by definition Indonesia remained self-sufficient in rice supply.

"We are not dependent on imports," he insisted.

He conceded however that there have been crop failures, forcing the government to import rice to ensure stability.

Hatta insisted that the government continue to set a target surplus of 5 percent in rice production.

"Even last year [when it was not so good a harvest] our surplus reached 3 percent," he explained. (mds)
